Worcester's Perry Manor care home has partnered with local Scouts to safeguard family recipes from extinction in a nationwide campaign.

An investigation conducted by Care UK, which runs the care home, discovered that 65 per cent of Brits no longer use handed-down family recipes.

The poll, consisting of 2,000 adults, revealed that 43 per cent of respondents are eager to preserve this culinary heritage.

As part of these preservation efforts, Care UK has introduced a free downloadable recipe book - Recipes to remember, with contributions from care homes all across the UK.

The book sports a range of traditional food items dating back to World War Two and even eccentric desserts from the 1970s, including residents' favourite meals and Care UK’s specialised recipes designed for older people.

Residents of Perry Manor, ardent to keep their recipes popular in Worcester, have teamed up with local Scouts for a cooking expedition.

During the event, Perry Manor's Head Chef Nicola baked a range of classic desserts, notably the fruit, ginger and lemon drizzle cakes, Victoria sponge, bread pudding, and a jam tart. These were favourites of the residents Mike Parsons, aged 83, and Ann Mayo, aged 83.

A fun blind taste test game called "What's the pud?" was held post-baking with the scouts.

Participants struggled with identifying the bread pudding, with the crowd favourite emerging as the Victoria sponge cake.

Mike said: "It is always nice having the younger generation visit the home. We integrated well and had fun doing the blind tasting. It was interesting to share old recipes with them and for them to try things they might not normally have!" Katherine Matthews, home manager at Perry Manor, said: "We’ve certainly been whipping up some treats here at Perry Manor as we revisited residents’ food favourites from decades gone by.

"It was fantastic to welcome the Scouts to Perry Manor for an afternoon of taste testing! Everyone had a great time talking about their favourite foods – and taste testing the Victoria sponge was certainly the cherry on the cake!"
