CONTROVERSIAL plans to create a fast food restaurant drive thru in a leady city suburb have stirred up opposition from residents as signs go up warning about the proposals.

The plans would involve a McDonald’s and a Starbucks being built off the A4440 by Warndon Villages in Worcester, near a roundabout.

Now a sign has been placed on the gatepost of a popular path off Plantation Drive in Worcester which reads: "Do you want a McDonald's next to here. Place your objection on the Worcester planning site."

The sign quotes the planning reference - 24/00213/FUL -- and reminds people of the deadline - May 23, adding: "So be quick."

Proposals have been put forward to build a restaurant and a coffee shop - both with drive-thrus - near the roundabout where Plantation Drive meets Trotshill Way and Parsonage Way. The site is on 0.7ha of undeveloped grass land to the east of the A4440.

The application site itself is on undeveloped land known as Sixways Park, just east of the A4440 in Roundhouse Way.

Plans for two drive-thru restaurants have been revealed. Plans submitted to Worcester City Council by developers Canmoor show that the existing access to Roundhouse Way would be used to access the site. People on the Warndon Villages Community Group have already voiced concerns, including the proposed site's closeness to Blackpole McDonald's and KFC, further along the A4440.

Wayne Lomax wrote: "Don't want anything there! There is already one at Blackpole a mile away! Will just mean more traffic, boy racers, litter etc."

Planning documents available online say the proposal is 'a high quality sustainable development' and 'will positively contribute towards the supply of employment opportunities'.

Some members of the group agreed and said it would create 'job opportunities' and another said most of the people objecting were 'retired'. Other calls were for a Burger King instead.

Both the McDonald’s and the Starbucks would have a drive-thru, with order, pay and collection windows and routes wrapping around the buildings.

The site would include 67 parking spaces including 12 electric vehicle charging spaces, six disabled spaces and three motorcycle spaces.

There would be cycle parking for 12 bikes and external seating areas close to both buildings.

Cllr Stephen Hodgson said he has “serious concerns” about the proposal and expects strong representation from both Warndon Parish Council and residents.

Cllr Jill Desayrah, who is fighting another application for a Starbucks drive thru nearby at Elgar Retail Park in Blackpole said: "“Lack of another suitable site is one reason given for the drive thru Starbucks application at the Elgar Retail park.

"As this new site is less than a mile away, that no longer applies. Very similar objections have been lodged against this new application. But their impact is far worse at the Elgar Retail park because it’s within a residential area.”
