Mason setback adds to County woe
MATT Mason suffered a minor setback in his return from injury after limping off the field during the final day of Worcestershire's match ag-ainst Loughborough UCCE at Kidderminster.
The 34-year-old seamer, who was making his comeback after 10 months following a shoulder operation, pulled up four balls into his fourth over in the students' second innings with a groin strain.
Luckily for Mason, though, it was only a minor injury and the Australian-born bowler is not expected to be out for too long.
"It's not too bad," Mason said. "It's just a grade-one strain so hopefully I'll be back in a couple of days."
The three-day match against Loughborough petered out into a draw as Worcestershire's inexperienced attack were unable to take control.
The New Road side, who closed on Thursday at 200-0, added 19 more runs to their overnight score with Stephen Moore, who scored 138 off 107 balls the previous day, sliced Tom Parsons to Johan Malcolm in the fifth over of the day and was out for 144.
Worcestershire skipper Gareth Batty declared after half- an-hour's play with Daryl Mitchell unbeaten on 65 and Moeen Ali one not out.
Mason and Chris Whelan kept things tight early on in the students' second innings as they needed 360 to win.
But when Mason limped off, the New Road side were left with a seam attack of Whelan, Richard Jones and Mehraj Ahmed, a triumvirate that only have a handful of first-class games between them, leaving off-spinning captain Batty to do most of the work.
The skipper played his part, claiming four more wickets to add to the five he took in the first innings, while Mehraj had Alan Cope caught behind for a duck.
Loughborough opener Paul Borrington played well for his 102 but a draw was called with an hour left to play with the students' on 235-5.
